Rulani Mokwena Backs Sundowns Trio for Footballer of the Season Award

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena believes his players deserve top honors in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He has praised Lucas Ribeiro, Marcelo Allende, and Teboho Mokoena, suggesting they should be in the running for the prestigious Footballer of the Season award.

Mokwena also mentioned his goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, as a top contender.

"I don't think we've seen the best of Lucas Ribeiro yet, but he's a strong candidate for Footballer of the Season.

Though I believe Ronwen Williams should win it, Ribeiro, Allende, and Mokoena are also deserving," said Mokwena.

In addition to his own players, Mokwena acknowledged the contributions of Orlando Pirates' Patrick Maswanganyi and Stellenbosch's Jayden Adams.

However, he emphasized that his Sundowns players have shown exceptional performances this season.

"You have to commend Maswanganyi and Adams, but the reality is that Williams, Mokoena, Allende, and Ribeiro have been outstanding," Mokwena added.

Mamelodi Sundowns are close to breaking the record for the highest points in a 30-game PSL season, set at 71 points by coach Pitso Mosimane in the 2015/16 season.

After their recent 2-0 win over Royal AM, Sundowns need just three more points from their remaining three league matches to surpass this record.

They are also aiming to finish the season unbeaten, a feat never accomplished before in the country.

"History will remember this group. I don’t know what will be written, but it will be something significant," Mokwena said after the victory over Royal AM.

Sundowns will face Stellenbosch at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, followed by a match against TS Galaxy, and will conclude the season against Cape Town City on May 25.
